5S is a process improvement methodology that aims to improve workplace order and standards. This methodology is of Japanese origin and is expressed by the initials of five Japanese words:
Seiri (Classification): Refers to distinguishing unnecessary items and removing unnecessary items from the workplace. Only essential items are preserved and unused, faulty or unnecessary items are eliminated.
Seiton (Arrangement): Refers to the neat and orderly arrangement of items in the workplace. It ensures that everything is in a specific place and can be easily found. This step increases efficiency and reduces waste in the workplace.
Seiso (Cleaning): Refers to the steps taken to ensure cleanliness and order are maintained. Regular cleaning and maintenance of the workplace increases the efficiency of business processes.
Seiketsu (Standardization): Ensures continuity by establishing standards and ensuring that order and cleanliness are maintained in the workplace. Set standards increase consistency and quality in the workplace.
Shitsuke (Discipline): It refers to maintaining discipline to maintain order, cleanliness and standards in the workplace. It is important that staff constantly adapt and continue to implement 5S principles.
5S is a widely used methodology to increase workplace efficiency, reduce waste, prevent occupational accidents, and generally improve workplace culture.
